Recognising emotions and setting boundaries

I’m not sure who wrote this one (disclaimer: it wasn’t me), but it certainly resonates. Most of us have had the experience of feeling totally consumed by an overwhelming amount that we “should” be dealing with or doing. It can show up as managing other people’s emotions or reactions, feeling consumed by work, or a myriad of combinations of things that are going on in life at any time.

If this sounds familiar, try this:

Check in with your emotions. If you have been feeling as though you are on a runaway train, it’s normal not to pay much attention to your emotional responses other than to think “I’m so stressed”. Recognising and reflecting on your emotions can help you to figure out what you really need at this point in time. Talking this through with others or in therapy can be helpful.

Set boundaries. Focus on what you need, and set limits as needed. Practice makes perfect here – don’t be discouraged if you find it difficult at first.

Remember – you can’t change other people, only they can do that.
